Kingsport’s Sculpture Walk is back for its sixth year, with 10 new pieces on display along Broad and Main streets downtown.

Curator Peggy Wood Townsend selected the sculptures out of 47 works submitted to Kingsport’s Cultural Arts Division by 28 artists from across the country.

Townsend is interim director of Public Art Chattanooga and co-owner of Townsend Atelier, which makes and sells fine mold-making and casting materials, finishes and patinas to artists and craftspeople around the globe. Townsend will return to Kingsport on July 14 to lead a Sculpture Walk tour as part of Kingsport’s Fun Fest.

The sculptures are:

No. 1 — “Double Wedge” by Carl Billingsly, whose painted steel sculpture was designed so that its colors change with the light and angle of view.

No. 2 — Mark Connelly’s “Lamhanna (Hands),” inspired by a natural rock formation found in Glen lyon, Perthshire, Scotland.

“When viewed from a certain angle, the rocks look like a pair of hands pressed together,” Connelly said. “‘Lamhanna’ is the ancient Gaelic word for hands. My piece is an abstract interpretation of this formation. I wanted to capture the precarious nature of the rocks without literally replicating them. Working with steel, I created the ‘hands’ as one monolithic piece, and to capture the tension of the original formation, I elevated and suspended the ‘hands’ between two adjacent boulder-like shapes.”

No. 3 — “IPO 004 Captured Interplanetary Object” by Bob Coon.

No. 4 — Jim Galucci’s “Arrow Arch.” Galucci’s steel sculpture is a statement about the directions and misdirections we are given throughout life.

“Gates have been found throughout the history of Western civilization as not only utilitarian architectural elements but as symbols in art and literature,” Galucci said. “This symbolism arises from the paradox that the gate inherently possesses. A gate may be opened or closed; a way of passage or obstruction; a means of confinement or release. And today, the symbol of a gate is used to describe a computer chip at work, storing and releasing bytes of information.”

No. 5 — Aaron Hussey’s self-portrait sculpture “Dreamer,” which questions the artist’s relationship to the built environment, the natural world and human society.

No. 6 — Gregory Johnson’s clay “Birdwatchers,” which reflects a strong European tradition of a softly detailed surface quality while expressing the energy and vitality of contemporary life.

No. 7 — Hanna Jubran’s painted steel sculpture “Earth, Water, Fire, Wind,” from his series of works dealing with the concept of earth’s four elements.

“It expresses the cycle of life, growth and continuum, and the interplay of shape, form, space, and colors,” said Jubran, a sculpture professor at East Carolina University in Greenville, N.C. “These four elements are seen in a variety of forms, shapes and colors as they occur in nature. They are ever changing. As Gibran Khalil Gibran said, ‘The mission of art is to bring out the unfamiliar from the most familiar.’ With this, I would like the viewer to gaze, interact and experience my sculpture.”

No. 8 — Jaak Kindberg’s recycled steel and stone sculpture “25 or 6 to 4” is a whimsical tribute to the famous song written and recorded by Chicago.

No. 9 — Ohio-based sculptor Shawn Morin’s pink granite “A Lily for My Lady.”

No. 10 — Davis Whitfield’s “First Spring,” inspired by a sprouting buckeye seed, growing upward while casting aside the shell from which it grew.

“For me, public sculpture is about engaging people to interact with art,” said Whitfield, who graduated from Delta State University with a bachelor’s degree in Painting and Sculpture in 2002 before moving to the mountains of North Carolina, where he became apprentice to and is now partners with renowned sculptor and painter Wayne Trapp. “By igniting the imagination of the viewer, sculpture allows us to revisit our childhoods, thinking in ways that most of us have not thought in ages. Public sculptures can be interpreted however the viewer pleases. Recognizable shapes and forms become expressed in new context. For this reason, I typically shy away from speaking specifically about my inspiration for a particular piece of sculpture so I do not limit what the viewer may come up with on their own.”

The Sculpture Walk’s “Guide by Cell” feature allows viewers to access information on the sculptures by phone. Dial the general number, (423) 200-3205, then enter the item number followed by the # sign. General information can be found at item numbers 1-10. The artists’ thoughts are recorded at items 101-110, and the juror’s comments are recorded at 201-210.

Sculpture Walk VI is sponsored by Absolute Communications, Bank of Tennessee, Cindy Saadeh Gallery, Citizen’s Bank, Downtown Kingsport Association, Eastman, Main Street Art Gallery, Eastman Credit Union, Jeffrey Stoner Photography, Kingsport Chamber of Commerce, Kingsport Convention Visitor’s Bureau, Kingsport Times-News, Regional Eye Center, Pal’s, Kingsport Garden Club, Kingsport Art Guild, Delphian Club of Kingsport, Tennessee Arts Commission, Eastman Lifting Services, Engage Kingsport and City of Kingsport Public Works.

For more information, call the Cultural Arts Division at (423) 392-8416.

Keep Kingsport Beautiful will present “Saturday in the Gardens”, sponsored by Eastman Chemical Company, on Saturday, June 23 from 9 AM to 2 PM. Experience a day of garden tours showcasing six of Kingsport’s most beautiful private gardens. Proceeds from the event will benefit Keep Kingsport Beautiful’s beautification and education programs.

Featured gardens include that of Bernie and Darlene Mentro on Lochiel Court in Kingsport. This garden of nearly 100 different varieties of perennials and flowering shrubs evolved from a family passion for gardening. Heirloom transplants from family gardens provide color from early spring to late fall.

The Dennis Marshall garden located on Welch Road in Bloomingdale is located on 1.5 acres of land surrounded by a split rail fence accented by purple leaf maples. Marshall’s specialties include daylilies and berries for winemaking. The hillside garden provides relaxing views of Kingsport and the surrounding mountains.

Located on Midland Drive, the garden of Paulette Fox proves that good things really do come in small packages. The front of this home is framed by an abundance of plants and flowers, rather than grass. Upon entering the backyard, guests will find surprises ranging from an inviting pool area to Casey’s Secret Garden and an outdoor kitchen.

Two historic homes frame the gardens of John and Nancy Scott on Netherland Inn Road. Located on the south fork of the Holston River, the one acre garden is on the Greenbelt in Riverfront Park. Representing about twelve years of gardening, plantings include herbs, vegetables, and perennials.

Driving up to the home of Dr. Mark Dixon, you will find southern magnolias leading up the hillside to the house and a spring fed pond down in the valley. This property features both English style and Charleston inspired gardens.

The garden of Skip Norrell is located in one of Kingsport’s oldest residential areas. Follow a cobblestone pathway through lush shade plantings to a backyard sanctuary that features multi-level entertainment areas and garden rooms. Plantings include perennials, tropicals and an extravagant display of blooming annuals.

As a bonus offering on the tour, ticket holders are encouraged to visit the Sculpture Walk in downtown Kingsport. This curated exhibit of contemporary public art is located throughout the downtown area. The Sculpture Walk is a vital part of Kingsport’s public art program.

Tickets for “Saturday in the Gardens” are $20 and may be purchased at the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce at 400 Clinchfield Street, Ste 100. Children 12 and under are admitted free.

Ticket holders may visit the gardens at their own pace and in their order of choice. Homeowners and master gardeners will be available to identify plants and answer gardening questions. Tours will be held rain or shine.

Please wear appropriate and comfortable shoes. All areas may not be level or handicapped accessible. Please exercise caution when walking through the gardens. No pets please!

For more information, contact Robin Cleary at 423-392-8814 or rcleary@kingsportchamber.org.

Keep Kingsport Beautiful is a partnership of the City of Kingsport and the Kingsport Area Chamber of Commerce. An affiliate of Keep America Beautiful and Keep Tennessee Beautiful, KKB has won over 65 national, state and environmental awards.
